Architectural Technology 5 (ATV) is looking at building integrated technical systems such as structural form, environmental systems, materials, construction methods and fire protection elements. Different groups are assigned to one of the four most critical building systems - express staircase, four-way curtain-wall joint for commercial, four-way curtain-wall joint for residential, and elevator systems. Our group is looking at the elevator system. The elevator system, as a technological innovation, changed the world and made highrises and skyscrapers possible. We approached it with an analytical approach by dissecting individual elevator components and their interrelationships with each other to build a comprehensive understanding of how the elevator system functions. What are the structural systems of elevators? How do they move up and down? What are the operational considerations? How do we ensure the safety and welfare of occupants?
